The arrival of wreckers in his area puts "Squire Trevenyan" (Peter Cushing) in a position where he must attempt to put an end to their violent actions. However, things become complicated when his son "Christopher" (John Fraser) comes home with information about who is involved and what they’re doing; suddenly, the Squire finds himself uneasy and conflicted—but for what reason? Is it merely because Christopher has a fondness for "Louise" (Michèle Mercier), or perhaps he's worried about her father, "Black John" (Bernard Lee), a man of considerable strength? Regardless, it seems like calling in the Redcoats is now necessary. This feels like a typical adventure film, lacking any real suspense or originality as it moves steadily toward its inevitable end. A few details seem off—I don’t believe palm trees are native to the UK—but Cushing still manages to bring some of his usual charm to the role, and Lee delivers a suitably forceful portrayal of a bandit. It's not something I expect to remember anytime soon, but I appreciate this kind of film and did find it an easygoing and pleasant costume drama.
