It's probably not a great idea to be married to someone who works as a newsreel cameraman. It seems wherever they are, something terrible has either just occurred or is about to. From severe weather events like blizzards and hurricanes to political unrest and accidents, these resourceful and skilled individuals can be found operating their hand-cranked film cameras to record events that range from uncomfortable and wet to violent and harsh, often putting themselves at risk in the process. This fast-moving and tightly edited short film does seem to follow the saying that negative news is interesting news while positive news isn't, because it focuses heavily on things going wrong—just watch a man’s hopeful effort to fly from America to Rome. There are also some segments covering sports and celebrities included, which at least lets them avoid some of the more dangerous situations. In roughly twenty minutes, this gives you a sense of what news audiences were seeing in movie theaters back in 1935 and how inventive those cameramen were when it came to sharing all kinds of stories.
