John Chard on Port of New York

6/10 · Jun 26, 2015

Laszlo Benedek’s Port of New York was crafted by Eugene Ling and features Scott Brady, Richard Rober, Yul Brynner, and K.T. Stevens in the cast. Sol Kaplan handled the music, while George Diskant was responsible for the cinematography. The story involves two federal agents attempting to dismantle a group of drug dealers who are using the Port of New York as their base of operations. What works well is clear: Diskant’s photography creates a palpable sense of unease, the scenes filmed on location in New York City look great, and Brynner's performance as a sinister antagonist feels just right—it seems to be an early step toward his later fame. The film has a somewhat documentary feel, including narration, and it contains enough violence to maintain interest throughout. It’s a lesser-known film noir with some positive qualities. 6/10
