This film feels like a poorly constructed setup designed primarily to showcase British comedian Eric Sykes ("Harris"). He plays a traveling salesman who unexpectedly winds up in an isolated Italian village where he immediately becomes quite popular. Apparently, all the men have left to find employment, leaving the women there without male company for some time. Complicating things further, a request has arrived from London seeking a bride, and with the local residents unable to choose between candidates, the squire "Don Calogere" (John le Mesurier) and the priest determine that the first person to arrive should make the decision. “Harris” then finds himself dealing with unwanted attention while needing to select someone, a choice certain to create conflict within the community. The humor quickly becomes tiresome, although the dynamic between Sykes and "Angelina" (Scilla Gabel), who seems entirely unimpressed by him, provides a small measure of amusement. While Sykes was a well-liked comedian in Britain and George Pollock was a capable filmmaker, this project falls short; it’s more unsuccessful than successful and its ninety-minute length feels excessive. I didn't enjoy it, unfortunately.
