"Long John Silver's Treasure Island" (1954) held appeal for me because Robert Newton reprised his role from the earlier film as the one-legged cook/pirate and general scoundrel. The plot centers on young "Jim," portrayed by Kit Taylor, who requires rescuing from the notorious pirate captain "El Toro," played by Lloyd Burrell, before they can locate treasure and return to England. As expected, things aren't straightforward; once ashore on Hispaniola, Silver must rely on his intelligence and cunning to outmaneuver a crew that isn’t entirely reliable, often fueled by “Israel Hands,” acted by Rod Taylor. While there's plenty of action with Newton delivering his usual energetic performance, the supporting actors didn't quite measure up, and the narrative feels like an uneven combination of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel alongside some newly introduced characters—including a potential match for Jim (Connie Gilchrist). I found it entertaining, though that may have been due to fond memories; ultimately, I was somewhat let down.
