Johnny Weissmuller takes on a role resembling Victor Mature’s persona while portraying himself in this adventure, as he leads Jean Bryon's assertive “Ellen” through what is supposedly a jungle setting on a mission to locate a missing person. As they venture further into the supposed wilderness, the animals become increasingly threatening, the dangers escalate, and the insects prove exceptionally dangerous – all of this occurring within California! Their journey eventually brings them to a concealed kingdom inhabited by an unusual African group akin to the oompa-loompas, where Helene Stanton plays “Oma,” the High Priestess of Ra, who has been living undisturbed for hundreds of years. Following the pattern established in "She," she develops romantic feelings, which predictably leads to complications. It's not offensively bad, but it lacks any spark of creativity as we’re shown stock footage of rhinos, tigers, and lions while moving toward an ending that makes the seventy-minute length feel much longer than it is. This might be due in part to Weissmuller’s lack of charisma; he would have been better off remaining in his traditional loincloth and engaging in vine-swinging yodeling. The writing also felt uninspired and overly wordy. It's a disappointing production, frankly.
