“Is that a moustache or are you wearing a squirrel?” That line encapsulates the humor—or lack thereof—found throughout this uneven musical comedy. The story follows Bob (James Ellison), a jaded filmmaker who intended to record ice skaters but missed his flight! Believing one person is much like another, he winds up at Central Park’s local rink, where he finds Marie (Dorothy Lewis). He considers her ideal material for his film. Hoping to put the whole thing behind him, Bob's plans are disrupted when promoter Larry (Phil Silvers) decides she has potential for his “Ice-capades” show. An agreement is reached, but Bob’s expectations are challenged when he meets the actual performer—the woman he thought he was working with is facing immigration problems in the United States. With his boss displeased, Bob and his assistant Pete (Alan Mowbray) must figure out how to keep her in the country, a task that requires promises and a wedding ring. That’s assuming she'll stay put long enough for anyone—including Bob—to try and win her over. While those are the basic plot points, they don't fully convey what it's like to watch a movie that mostly exists to showcase friendly ice skating sequences combining impressive skill with somewhat predictable physical comedy and an astonishing four-foot-high performance on stilts! The film runs about thirty minutes too long and some jokes are stretched thin, but there are enough worthwhile moments to make it worth seeing, even if you’re unlikely to remember it later.
