The film is likely best known for its unnamed characters. Ryan O’Neal portrays the central figure whose actions while trying to escape draw the notice of detective Bruce Dern, who operates in a somewhat disreputable world. The result is an adventure that feels stripped down; I wouldn't classify it as a thriller. It shows people with questionable ethics existing in environments that seem to give their activities some level of acceptance, regardless of whether they are on the right or wrong side of the law. There are exciting car sequences, and the film moves along quickly. Both O’Neal and Dern deliver strong performances; their personalities carry a significant amount of the acting load. I felt Isabelle Adjani's role was too brief, as her character seemed capable of more. Overall, Walter Hill has produced an enjoyable, though not particularly original, and visually appealing movie that is full of energy but perhaps lacking in the writing or story itself.
