John Chard on The Man from Bitter Ridge

6.5/10 · Feb 21, 2016

The film isn’t really harsh; instead, it has a sharp quality. Jack Arnold directed The Man from Bitter Ridge, with the screenplay by Lawrence Roman, Teddi Sherman and William MacLeod Raine. Russell Metty handled the cinematography, and the cast includes Lex Barker, Mara Corday, Stephen McNally and John Dehner. Jeff Carr, played by Barker, is an investigator who goes to Tomahawk to figure out who’s been stopping the stagecoach and killing people. It's a typical Western movie from the 1950s, but it might appeal to someone really into that genre. The photography by Metty in Conejo Valley and Skeleton Canyon—shot in Eastman Color (the blues are striking)—keeps things visually interesting with plenty of action sequences including explosions, gunfights and fist fights alongside a sense of hidden political dealings. The performances from McNally and Dehner add to the film’s quality, and Corday is attractive enough to make up for what can be a predictable female role in Westerns. The script has some clever moments, like using a black sheep comparison, and it’s amusing how often the main character gets easily overpowered! There's also an instance of wrongful detention included. It won’t completely knock you over but it is still entertaining. It earns a 6.5 out of 10.
