The Scottish populace, weary of the Hanoverian rule that came after King James VII/II was removed, eagerly anticipates the arrival of his son – known as the “Bonnie Prince” (David Niven) – who summons a meeting of clans at Glenfinnan and announces his intention to reinstate the Stuart lineage. While some harbor doubts, things look promising once he gains the backing of the respected soldier "Murray" (Jack Hawkins) and numerous chieftains across Scotland, and they embark on a mission to drive out the “redcoats” not only from Scotland but throughout the entire kingdom. The initial progress is unexpectedly positive, as many are enthusiastic about the prospect of change; however, as their advance continues southward and they confront the Duke of Cumberland (Elwyn Brook-Jones) and his army of thirty thousand soldiers, difficulties begin to arise. This film presents a softened and idealized portrayal of British history during a period marked by upheaval and conflict, which is likely to be disliked by historians and those who insist on accuracy, but as an example of Hollywood storytelling it provides Niven with the opportunity to display some playful charm as a figure known for his strong personality, while Margaret Leighton does her best with a Scottish accent in the role of Flora MacDonald. A number of familiar Scottish actors, including John Laurie, Finlay Currie, and James Hayter, contribute to the film’s distinctive atmosphere. It runs a little long, but there's sufficient action to balance the romantic aspects, and it’s perfectly acceptable entertainment if you simply relax and appreciate it for what it is, making two and a quarter hours pass pleasantly.
