This movie feels disjointed, as if it exists in two separate entities. The visuals are striking – there's some beautiful Mexican landscape, alluring dance numbers, and a pleasant firework sequence. Unfortunately, the narrative and performances don’t measure up to that standard. Linda Darnell is sheltering in Mexico, attempting to stay out of reach of her gangster boyfriend. Her situation changes when she consents to give evidence at a US Senate inquiry; returning to America becomes necessary, but doing so means avoiding his hired muscle, portrayed by Jack Palance. She encounters and receives assistance from former boxer Robert Mitchum. The film progresses slowly, and neither of the male characters possesses sufficient magnetism to command attention; Darnell’s role is also underdeveloped. A few tense moments occur on a cable car, though mostly this is an unexceptional gangster movie lacking real suspense and concluding abruptly.
