The story of Dick Turpin seems like it would have been a good match for Louis Hayward’s kind of action-adventure films. There were chances to steal from the rich who used the roads of 1730s England, which weren’t yet watched over by law enforcement. Unfortunately, Ralph Murphy seemed more interested in the romantic side of this outlaw and what we get is a slow, emotional story. Following one of his robberies, he encounters and falls for "Joyce" (Patricia Medina), then tries living as an ordinary innkeeper with his buddy Tom King (Tom Tully) before returning to crime. He runs into trouble when he steals a paper from "Lord Willoughby" (Alan Mowbray) that shows there’s treason happening—and suddenly, the reward for him increases. His jealous friend "Cecile" (Suzanne Dalbert) also turns against him. There are moments of genuine excitement, like his fast ride to York on “Black Bess,” but otherwise it just feels dull; neither of the female leads makes much of an impression or has anything interesting to say. Mowbray doesn’t appear often as the antagonist and the direction is simply unremarkable. Hayward does his best, but he seems less energetic than before and can't make this work as well as he used to. I wasn’t familiar with this movie until now, but after seeing it, I’m not really shocked that I hadn’t heard of it.
