It's a moving wartime story primarily seen through the experiences of the young character Hung (played by Phi Lan). With his father fighting in the war, he resides alongside his younger sister Xuan (Huynh Cazenas) and their sick mother (Xuan Ha), but as the conflict draws nearer, their safety is increasingly threatened. To escape danger, they move in with relatives, though those family members seem largely indifferent to their presence. When their mother passes away from her illness, the responsibility of caring for his sister falls on Hung’s shoulders. He attempts various jobs—gathering discarded newspapers and polishing shoes—but eventually finds himself overwhelmed and places Xuan under the care of a local French hospital. His struggle to stay alive leads him to encounter people involved in the fighting, and because he's a child, he offers glimpses into the beliefs of those who are certain they’re right. He observes conflicting ideologies and quickly understands that neither side values him or his sister. The possibility of rescue appears to rest on whether they can reconnect with their father; this takes us to a man actively participating in the war but completely unaware of his family's situation. The film is visually striking, and the cinematography showcasing Vietnam and its rural lifestyle is truly beautiful. Phi Lan gives an excellent performance, seamlessly blending the roles of a strong, caring figure and a resourceful street kid. This movie demonstrates how warfare affects those least prepared to handle it—those who are innocent—without resorting to sensationalism or graphic violence; we witness these events through their eyes, and it’s presented effectively.
