It occurs to me that back in 1970s Scotland, perhaps quite a few men would simply vanish each morning, telling their families they were off to work while actually just passing the time on the streets until payday or it felt safe enough to return. That’s essentially what "Bunny" (Jon Morrison) is doing when he crosses paths with “Jody” (Billy Connolly), who's whistling "Flower of Scotland." Approaching forty, Jody has a comparable tale to recount, and so the pair spend the day together, sharing inexpensive wine and experiencing both genuine and imagined escapades. The script employs some pleasing local language, enabling the two men to form a friendship while the older man offers thoughtful observations about life, love, and finding contentment. Though classified as a comedy, the tone remains cheerful, yet it carries weight as the younger man begins to contemplate his own existence and decisions, taking Jody as an example of what could lie ahead. One might even wonder if "Bunny’s" future is just as predetermined as that of his newfound companion. There's a genuine connection between them, some silly moments, and I was reminded of playing make-believe cowboys and Indians with my dad—though our version involved Redcoats and Highlanders instead. It becomes quite touching at times, and with only the two men and a damp hillside as their backdrop, it provides an engaging, well-acted, and occasionally reflective glimpse into life viewed through a lens of negativity balanced by realism.
