This production feels like taking a familiar plot—essentially a reworking of Orson Welles’ 1943 film, substituting a maritime setting for a train and oil for gunfire—but the result falls far short of its predecessor. The cast doesn't exactly inspire confidence either. Sam Waterston seems underwhelming in his role as "Graham," the scientist who finds himself embroiled in a Turkish plot after uncovering potential oil reserves in the desert. This discovery puts him at risk, forcing him to flee before he’s taken out by the numerous—though not particularly skilled—assassins pursuing him. He boards a train hoping for an escape, but one can't help but wonder if those around him are who they appear to be. It becomes clear early on that "Banat," played by Ian McShane, represents his greatest threat, and this is where my initial issue arose; he lacks any real sense of menace, resembling more a cucumber sandwich than a formidable adversary. Ian Mostel’s deceitful character, “Kopelkin,” doesn't fare much better. While the supporting players include recognizable names, they appear too briefly to significantly elevate what is ultimately a rather contrived and formulaic thriller—one that disappointingly lacks excitement. I did find some enjoyment in the final moments as tensions escalated, but beyond that, this is a forgettable television movie that won't leave much of an impression.
