Following his discharge from the navy, “Elvis” (Gael García Bernal) begins searching for his biological father, "Dave" (William Hurt), who is now a church minister with another family and whom he’s never encountered. At first, his father worries that acknowledging a grown son born outside of marriage could ruin his life, so he requests that “Elvis” stay away. However, “Elvis” has different intentions, including charming his sixteen-year-old half-sister, "Malerie" (Pell James), making sure his half-brother, “Paul” (Paul Dano), doesn’t interfere too much, and ultimately forcing his father to reconsider his relationships with both God and this newly discovered son. Considering the constraints of his faith and family responsibilities, what possibility is there that "Dave" will come around? My main problem with this rather underwhelming drama is that I don't believe GGB fits the role; he doesn’t project even a hint of danger as his scheming “Elvis” carries out his plans. It also doesn’t help that very few of the characters, aside from Dano’s, are likeable or easy to connect with, and I gradually lost interest as the story seemed increasingly manufactured in an attempt to pose questions about the strength or importance of faith. Hurt is noteworthy, particularly as the film nears its end, but it just didn't quite deliver for me, unfortunately.
