William Wellman seems determined to explore the possibilities of this relatively new "talkie" format, working within the constraints of a modest budget and the limitations of the script for this B-thriller. He largely manages to deliver a briskly paced series of events centered around Hal Skelly as the stern, local police officer “Dan Malone,” pursuing his troubled brother “Ray” (Chester Morris) after some disruptive incidents at his former girlfriend's house, "Kitty" (Evelyn Brent), create considerable tension. This prompts "Dan" to adopt a rather relentless approach to law enforcement, which while bringing certain advantages, also causes him to lose the support of some people. It’s an early showcase for surprisingly effective special effects and includes numerous action sequences that help maintain a quick pace. The script's dialogue isn't particularly strong, and I have to admit Evelyn Brent’s portrayal felt somewhat superficial and didn't enhance the intense relationship between the brothers. There's a fair amount of suspense built up before the resolution, which, while predictable, is adequate. Skelly began his career on stage, and occasionally his performance here betrays that background – he doesn't appear entirely comfortable in front of the camera (you can almost sense fatigue in his expression, hinting at numerous retakes), but Morris does feel natural; though perhaps his part could have been more substantial, he contributes positively to a film that is worth an hour of viewing.
