CinemaSerf on Captain Boycott

It’s genuinely captivating, mainly because it offers a history lesson regarding how the term "boycott" came about. Cecil Parker portrays the gentleman around whom the resentment of his Irish tenant farmers coalesces in the latter part of the 1800s. Charles Parnell (Robert Donat) advocates for a more peaceful way to demonstrate opposition—and Stewart Granger, as “Hugh,” urges those working with him to refuse their duties, halt crop collection, forgo rent payments, and abstain from associating with anyone willing to participate in this unfair system. Through his representative "Connell" (Mervyn Jones), the Captain orchestrates the eviction of his farmers, which quickly generates tension between Granger and his romantic interest “Anne” (Kathleen Ryan). She has assumed a tenancy previously held by an ousted family and consequently faces disapproval from those around her. The narrative largely functions to showcase Granger; he possesses a captivating presence and undeniable charm, as does Parker in the role of the self-important Captain. Mervyn Johns is also effective as his rather sly follower, and Alastair Sim provides an interesting performance as the clergyman "McKeogh." However, the writing feels stiff—the actors’ accents appear somewhat inconsistent—and the narrative concerning perseverance and resolve fails to convincingly depict either quality. The film easily occupies 90 minutes, but it perhaps feels a little too superficial given the gravity of the topic at hand.
