The film immediately grabs your attention with the spirited entrance of "Miss Julie," portrayed by Bette Davis, riding in on horseback. She's the orphaned daughter of a prosperous southern family, someone everyone is eager to associate with – despite her occasionally difficult nature. “Dill,” played by Henry Fonda, seems like the frontrunner for her affections, though he’s not easily swayed. Her insistence on wearing an unsuitable red dress to a formal event initially gains her his hesitant approval as he accompanies her, but the subsequent consequences lead him to leave, abandoning her and fueling her determination to win him back. The arrival of a plague prompts her to seek refuge at their plantation, where he unexpectedly reappears – with a complicating factor. With her usual sense of order disrupted, "Miss Julie" is compelled to consider something beyond herself, possibly for the first time. However, I found this film leaned too heavily into melodrama. While Davis delivers a strong performance initially, the narrative ultimately guides us toward a rather predictable and overly sentimental conclusion, somewhat weighed down by the presence of the excessively confident “Buck,” portrayed by George Brent. Donald Crisp and Spring Byington offer occasional moments of stability, but overall, I found the story lacking substance and direction. It’s certainly a frustrated love story, yet I yearned for more of the original "Jezebel" and less of what her character evolved into. I recently watched this on a large screen, and even with my criticisms, it remains a beautiful example of lavishly produced cinema, showcasing a performer who truly commands attention.
