The film centers on Kathy (Barbara Stanwyck), an assertive reporter assigned to cover a crime from a female perspective, where she clashes with a prejudiced captain and finds a more understanding counterpart in Lieutenant Doyle (Sterling Hayden). Following a rapid courtship, they wed and share a home. She soon realizes her husband, while affectionate, is unambitious and satisfied remaining in the same uninspired job surrounded by unchanging coworkers until retirement. Their marriage begins to falter, coinciding with her developing a connection with his discontented coworker Tony (Raymond Burr) and his quiet wife Alice (Far Wray). Infidelity then emerges, intensifying Kathy’s dissatisfaction and triggering an unfortunate event that plunges her husband and his unit into an investigation destined to disrupt everyone's lives. The film initially impresses, featuring Stanwyck delivering some clever remarks. However, it gradually diminishes in impact, evolving into a fairly conventional romantic thriller with complications. Raymond Burr isn't known for range, and he along with Hayden seem determined to deliver the stiffest performances possible. It’s diverting enough, but I felt it could easily be trimmed by twenty minutes, resulting in a more concise narrative about betrayal that might have been more effective.
