This marks Adam Sandler’s first time acting; he wasn’t involved in writing or directing, nor did he originate the concept for the film. He simply portrays the lead role of a comedian who isn't funny and aspires to be so (while on a boat). Sandler’s performance is not good—it’s clumsy—though that doesn’t really stand out considering how terrible everything else is. The filmmaking itself is poor, and the writing fares even worse. The film’s only real appeal comes from having Adam Sandler in it. **Going Overboard** attempts to present itself as a comedy, which turns out to be its biggest problem. It shares similarities with *The Room* and Tommy Wiseau's work, which gained cult status because of its flaws, but *The Room* is fundamentally a drama. The issues with the plot and broken atmosphere in that movie became a source of amusement for viewers. However, **Going Overboard**’s dramatic aspects are underdeveloped, making it hard to find humor in the film—though it's certainly possible. I wouldn’t suggest this movie to anyone outside of those studying Adam Sandler’s career. If you do choose to watch it, try to embrace its shortcomings and look for things to laugh at; that's about all **Going Overboard** has to offer.
