"Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back," released in 1980, came after the huge success of its predecessor three years earlier. It's a straightforward space fantasy centered on an oppressive empire and those who risk everything to oppose it. Among the performers are Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford portraying Han Solo, Carrie Fisher playing Princess Leia, Billy Dee Williams in the role of Lando Calrissian, Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and voice actors James Earl Jones (Darth Vader), Frank Oz (Yoda) and Clive Revill (Emperor). It’s a genuinely enjoyable, creative, and memorable space adventure with a fantastic ensemble. Although I tend to favor the more mature science fiction of Star Trek, I have to admit that this fantasy offers a diverting couple of hours filled with sci-fi action sequences, spaceships, a frozen world, asteroid caverns, and strange wetlands. The introduction of mental abilities is also something I find appealing. It’s certainly a plus that Fisher looks great here, as do Ford and Williams at the peak of their charm; even Hamill stands out in his youthful exuberance. And then there are RD-D2, C-3PO, and Chewbacca. The movie has a running time of 2 hours and 7 minutes. GRADE: B
