It’s hard to picture the challenges Spike Lee faced securing funding for this remarkable exploration of a figure who sparked intense debate unlike almost anyone since World War II. I describe it as an examination of a man, but it goes far beyond that, delving into complex issues surrounding racial and gender perspectives, ultimately leaving a lingering sense of discomfort. Despite all its merits, the film doesn't quite succeed as purely entertaining fare. My intention isn’t to diminish the seriousness of what’s being portrayed, but if it aimed to be a documentary, it would have benefited from greater adherence to factual accuracy rather than dramatized events – some based on reality and others not. As a biographical film, it feels somewhat caught between categories. The characters we encounter are largely unsavory people who were either inherently that way or succumbed to the negative influences of their surroundings and/or the worlds they built—a point vividly shown in how the women are treated by those around them. I was left with a strong impression that if there had been more consideration and kindness throughout, much of the violence from all sides might have been preventable. It’s essential viewing, though it's possible that time has lessened its impact, leaving us with a disheartening glimpse into an era when cruelty disregarded skin color.
