Wuchak on Four Fast Guns

This little-known black and white Western has a certain appeal because it’s geared toward adults and includes some unusual elements. It manages to be distinctive and demonstrates artistic merit. James Craig is the antihero in this film, proving that the Spaghetti Western wasn't the originator of that type of character. What sets it apart is that Craig’s portrayal of Sabin feels like a well-developed person rather than a flat, selfish stereotype. Martha Vickers delivers a lovely performance as the devoted blonde wife of the villain who uses a wheelchair (Paul Richards). She was 34 years old when filming took place, and this would be her last film appearance. Edgar Buchanan provides some comic relief as Dipper, Sabin’s companion. He reminds me of people I've actually known; in fact, I once had someone just like him working for me. Brett Halsey shows up later with a noteworthy disclosure about his character (I won’t reveal anything). His detached manner is striking, reminiscent of Clint Eastwood, whose fame wouldn't begin for four more years. John Swift also appears as a sullen adolescent who seems to be practically asking to be targeted by the gunmen. There’s an intriguing exploration of honoring marital boundaries even when feelings extend toward another person. A well-regarded film critic dismissed this movie as formulaic, but I don’t think that's accurate. The running time is brief at 1 hour and 13 minutes, and it was filmed in 1959 at Apacheland studios near Gold Canyon, Arizona, which is located east of Phoenix, with additional scenes shot in the Sonoran Desert southwest of there. Some interior shots were completed at Universal Studios. GRADE: B-/B
