This movie follows Jimmy Stewart as “Jimmy,” portraying a man whose music shop didn’t quite make it, and who finds himself employed by his uncle, “C.J.” (Charles Winninger). C.J. has a difficult relationship with the large and loud "McCorkle" family living next door, who are perpetually rehearsing their music—a source of joy for the town but annoyance for the older man. Stewart develops a friendship with the McCorkles, especially Molly (Paulette Goddard), and starts helping them secure performances without his uncle’s knowledge. When he gets the chance to take over their radio show slot, he lets them have it, leading to chaotic situations for everyone involved. I'm not sure I would accept an invitation to a McCorkle dinner; the lengthy musical introduction before their Irish stew probably made the food frigid by the time they began eating—and that pretty much encapsulates the entire film: it has a decent premise but lacks momentum and features several extended musical numbers that feel excessive, occasionally edging into absurdity. Stewart and Goddard don’t seem to have any real connection, and perhaps only Mary Gordon as “Ma McCorkle” manages to inject some life into things.
