Wuchak on Live a Little, Love a Little

7/10 · Nov 9, 2020

Elvis holds down two jobs in sunny Southern California while chasing after an unconventional woman who spends her time at the beach. A photographer, played by Presley, encounters a quirky and unconventional woman (Michele Carey) on Malibu’s beaches, which ultimately leads him to take on two separate jobs—one for a magazine similar to Playboy and another with a more traditional advertising agency, both located in the same Los Angeles building. Dick Sargent portrays yet another man who is captivated by this enigmatic woman. “Live a Little, Love a Little,” released in 1968, marked Elvis’s 28th film appearance and would be followed by just three more before he retired from acting. This movie stands out because of the effort to portray Elvis's character as more attuned to the trends of the 1960s. For instance, his romantic interest suggests they "make love" very shortly after their initial meeting. Fortunately, she provides a somewhat engaging look at her personality for those who are interested. Despite her eccentricities, Michele Carey is among the most physically striking actresses to appear in an Elvis movie, alongside Ann-Margret. Several other women also contribute to the film's visual appeal, such as Celeste Yarnall, the woman in white seen at the lively party where Greg shares a kiss. Elvis and Celeste developed a close friendship; they watched the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr. together during lunch inside his trailer. Celeste has emphasized how kind and caring Elvis was and how strongly he wanted to make others happy. Elvis’s weight became an issue around this period, requiring him to take diet pills to maintain a slim figure—something he wasn't thrilled about, as he yearned to tackle more substantial roles. Although he could no longer command his usual $1 million per movie, he still received $850,000 plus 50% of the film’s earnings. Nevertheless, Elvis appeared energetic and enthusiastic, retaining his characteristic charm. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 30 minutes and was filmed in Malibu, Marineland of the Pacific, and Los Angeles, California. GRADE: B
