John Chard on The Interrupted Journey

7/10 · Apr 24, 2015

It’s hard to believe that twenty people lost their lives and thirty-one were hurt, but this movie, The Interrupted Journey, directed by Daniel Birt and penned by Michael Pertwee, is a fairly compelling watch. Richard Todd, Valerie Hobson, Tom Walls, and Ralph Truman lead the cast, with music composed by Stanley Black and cinematography handled by Erwin Hillier. A sign warns: To Stop Train In Case Of Emergency Pull Down The Chain. Penalty For Improper Use £5. There’s something special about the female character—she's truly remarkable. This is a neat little British noir film. While the narrative occasionally veers into territory reminiscent of *The Twilight Zone*, the plot developments, surprises, and overall sense of intrigue manage to keep things engaging enough to hold your interest. The limited budget doesn’t seem to hinder Birt; with Hillier's help, he creates a dreamlike atmosphere through unusual camera angles, skillful use of shadows, and hazy lighting effects. Certain visual elements—the shapes of doorways, for example—subtly hint at the unfolding events. The acting is solid across the board, making it well worth seeing for fans of British noir. It earns a 7/10.
