The premise suggested a compelling examination into the motivations behind Nathuram Godse’s (Horst Buchholtz) plot and assassination of Mahatma Gandhi (J.S. Casshyap). What resulted was instead a slow-moving, strangely cast historical drama that, despite evident effort, ultimately falls short. The narrative explains through flashbacks why this Hindu blamed Gandhi for the deaths of numerous Hindus at the hands of Muslims—a loss he intends to avenge—and details his extensive journey across India to accomplish it. While Horst Buchholz is undeniably handsome and excels at portraying fear and panic – he possesses a face perfectly suited for conveying those feelings – his casting feels peculiar, as does that of Robert Morley, Harry Andrews (Gen. Singh), and José Ferrer, who delivers a remarkably stiff performance as Gopal Das, the policeman attempting to stop the various schemes unfolding. The film boasts beautiful cinematography and meticulous attention to its visual style, but the storyline suffers from a lack of momentum and underdeveloped characters. Aside from an almost uncanny resemblance from Casshyap, this production barely rises above the level of a routine melodrama. Buchholz’s performance does gain intensity toward the conclusion, yet overall I felt it dragged on far too long to reach any meaningful point.
