Eky on Jackie Brown

· Jun 16, 2012

Quentin Tarantino, known for films like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, presented Jackie Brown, which centers on deception within the drug-smuggling world. Drawing significant influence from 1970s blaxploitation movies, it follows Jackie Brown (Pam Grier), a flight attendant caught up in a scheme where she must decide whether to become an unwitting courier and betray her boss or find a way to keep the money for herself. It’s not often that a film features a female lead. While the story is based on Elmore Leonard’s novel Rum Punch, Tarantino managed to put his own stamp on it by incorporating sharp dialogue, dark comedy, and characteristic bursts of intense violence—gunplay, drugs, and explicit language—making it feel very much like a standard Tarantino production. The film also faced criticism due to Tarantino's repeated use of the word "nigger." Spike Lee publicly expressed outrage, stating that it appeared 38 times throughout the movie and constituted an insult to black people. Aside from this issue, I believe Jackie Brown benefits greatly from its ensemble cast, including Pam Grier, Bridget Fonda, Robert Forester, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, and Robert De Niro, all of whom contribute to the film's overall quality. It seems to me that each performer is given a layered character for viewers to analyze. Even though De Niro and Keaton have smaller parts, they are still quite impactful and leave a lasting impression.
