Philip Dunne brought together a pretty good group of actors for this thriller set after the war. "Lisa," played by Dolores Hart, is determined to reach Palestine – which was then under British control – and she asks for assistance from Dutch police officer "Jongman" (Stephen Boyd) to guide her through what turns out to be a complicated trip. The story unfolds in a fairly uncomplicated way, with notable performances from Leo McKern as barge captain "Brandt," Hugh Griffith, Donald Pleasance, and Marius Goring; Harry Andrews’ role as “Ayoob” doesn't quite work as well. Boyd delivers a performance that surpasses his typical work; he has more opportunity to truly engage with the material as his character develops feelings for his distressed travel companion. However, the film ultimately centers on Hart. She effectively conveys the sense of suffering and bereavement felt by her character who survived the Holocaust. Her frantic behavior when hiding in the barge's lower compartments to evade capture is strikingly real, as are many of the dangerous situations she encounters while trying to return home. The movie maintains a good momentum with minimal conversation, which draws you into Lisa’s experience.
