"Backfire" proves itself a remarkably powerful film from its opening moments, frequently misleading the audience, particularly after Mara finds herself obligated to bring Donny back home after what appears to be a suicide attempt – a situation complicated by his legal designation granting her power of attorney in case of incapacitation and the unwelcome involvement of his sister, Jill. This shift concentrates and clarifies the film's narrative, with the ultimate cause of events clearly connected to the recurring visual reminders of Donny’s experiences during the Vietnam War. The consistently controlled rhythm contributes significantly to its impact and ability to surprise and subvert what is expected, resulting in a deeply moving and unforgettable depiction of genuine friendship.
