John Chard on Psyche 59

6/10 · Feb 8, 2014

Psyche 59 comes from director Alexander Singer, with a screenplay by Julian Zimet based on Francoise des Ligneris' novel. The film features Patricia Neal, Curd Jurgens, Samantha Eggar, Ian Bannen and Beatrix Lehmann; Kenneth V. Jones composed the music and Walter Lassally was in charge of cinematography. Alison Crawford (Neal), who is blind, shares a home with her husband Eric (Jurgens). Their peaceful existence is disrupted when Alison’s younger sister Robin (Eggar) arrives to live with them. It quickly becomes clear that there are hidden truths surrounding both Robin and the circumstances leading to Alison's blindness. Psyche 59 strives for a Freudian thriller feel, and while it doesn’t quite reach greatness, it presents a peculiar, almost mesmerizing experience. The initial premise is captivating, the plot developments are daring, and the visuals create an appropriate atmosphere. Neal delivers a noteworthy portrayal of Alison, conveying both her physical challenges and emotional state. Eggar's performance is intensely alluring and adds considerable heat to the film, while Bannen and Jurgens do well despite one character lacking sufficient development and another having a somewhat unbelievable story arc. Ultimately, the resolution falls short, failing to deliver on the promise of a powerful dramatic conclusion; it’s an unsatisfying end after such a strong buildup, leaving you feeling let down. It earns a 6/10.
