BornKnight on Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night

The documentary show was recorded on September 30, 1987, roughly fourteen months before his death at age 52 from a heart attack while he was coming back from touring with The Traveling Wilburys—a group that included George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. This performance features a selection of Orbison’s popular songs performed at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Los Angeles' Ambassador Hotel. He was backed by the TCB Band, who had played with Elvis Presley from 1969 until his death in 1977; the band consisted of Glen Hardin on piano, James Burton on lead guitar, Jerry Scheff on bass, and Ronnie Tutt on drums. Several male background vocalists also participated, sometimes playing guitar, electric organ, or keyboards, including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, and Steven Soles. Female background singers included k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt. The closing credits include conversations with some of the band members about how Orbison impacted them. Other well-known people were in attendance, like David Lynch, Billy Idol, Patrick Swayze, Billy Bob Thornton, Sandra Bernhard, and Kris Kristofferson. There are a few things I’ve always found fascinating about Orbison—he was known for being withdrawn but possessed an extraordinary voice, considered by many to be among the best male singers following Elvis Presley. He consistently wore dark glasses due to poor eyesight that began in infancy and required very thick lenses; his wife, Barbara, who produced this video, was only 17 when they first met, and she was 32 at the time. Barbara Orbison passed away at age 62 from pancreatic cancer. Although the video includes just one of his better-known songs ("LA Woman"), it was a significant event with many celebrities present. I’d give it an 8 out of 10 / A-.
