If you’re anticipating some kind of horse-related plot based on the film’s name, you’ll be mistaken. This is instead a rather astute romantic story centered around finances and confidence – or their absence. Ann Harding portrays "Joan," who weds affluent playboy William Powell ("Fletcher"), and it's immediately apparent that his wealth is her main reason for entering into the marriage. He appears satisfied with this setup, maintains an affair, and they come to an understanding that a divorce will occur after a certain amount of time. Naturally, things don’t proceed exactly as planned, and John Cromwell succeeds in elevating what could have been a typical sentimental drama by adding some flair. The leads are both performing well; the script is nuanced, funny, and does a great deal to make the characters interesting, even if they aren't particularly sympathetic. Henry Stephenson delivers a solid performance as her father, and Lucille Browne also impresses as her nearly as self-serving sister "Val." It’s a familiar story, nothing groundbreaking – but it possesses a certain appeal that proved somewhat better than I initially thought it would be.
