The aging boxer known as “Stag” (played by George Bancroft) seems to retain much of his mental acuity even after facing off against the up-and-coming "Buzz" (John Wayne), leading him to retire and settle down with his girlfriend, “Puff” (Wynne Gibson). Their newfound stability is quickly challenged when a tragic accident claims the life of his manager, unexpectedly thrusting them into the role of caretakers for his orphaned son, “Ted.” Despite their limited financial resources, they are resolved to ensure he receives an education and avoids a life of hardship. This commitment appears even more important when they cross paths with "Buzz" again and discover that his boxing career has abruptly ended, leaving him facing considerable difficulties. Naturally, given the family history, the boy—now portrayed by Charles Starrett—develops a strong interest in pursuing a potentially profitable career as a boxer, creating tension within their close-knit group. The narrative follows a familiar path, but George Bancroft and Wynne Gibson deliver two genuinely moving performances that stand apart from typical portrayals of boxing as an easy route to success for those struggling with poverty. While the film would have benefited from brighter lighting in certain scenes, it's well-crafted and presents a worthwhile story.
