Hotsake on The Magnificent Chivalry

7/10 · Dec 31, 2016

It’s difficult to assign a precise score to this film because enjoyment played such a significant role in my assessment. A recurring issue I notice with many Jimmy Wang Yu films is the clear indication that he isn’t a particularly skilled martial artist; while he often manages to portray it adequately, the filmmaking techniques noticeably diverge from the prevalent single-wide shots of the era. His performance here, along with those of most of the cast, was quite good. The plot proved to be considerably stronger than what is typically found in "police goes undercover" movies. While the fight sequences occasionally feel awkward and sluggish, the extended duration and level of violence compensate for these shortcomings. The final confrontation stands out as a major highlight and significantly boosted my rating; it presented elements I hadn't encountered before in this genre, specifically a sword fight taking place in mud—something I found genuinely enjoyable. Furthermore, the depiction of both fighters becoming visibly exhausted felt like a welcome change. In most martial arts movies, characters routinely battle numerous opponents for extended periods without showing any signs of fatigue; seeing that level of realism was refreshing to me. Ultimately, this movie provided entertainment through its intricate yet accessible storyline, solid acting performances, and an exceptional final sequence.
