Eartha Kitt delivers a remarkable performance as the central character. Having been rejected by her family due to her unconventional lifestyle, she finds herself drawn into a world of simple wealth and questionable morality, eventually connecting with the clever sailor "Danny" portrayed by Sammy Davis Jr. Their connection is marked by an unsteady dynamic where commitment is elusive, leading her to encounter "Henry," a more conventional aspiring teacher (played by Rudolph Slocum, who doesn't quite make an impression), conveniently possessing $4,000. Could things finally be improving for her? However, her father, “Joe” (Rex Ingram), still seems intent on sabotaging her happiness—and even after he’s remarried, their relationship remains troubled and offers little hope of reconciliation. The narrative itself feels like a standard family drama with solid supporting performances. What elevates the film is the palpable connection between Davis and Kitt; she radiates charm despite playing someone who isn't particularly likable. There are some enjoyable musical numbers and dance sequences, along with charming animated segments at the conclusion. While the plot may not be groundbreaking, it’s worth seeing for the contributions of the two leads.
