It’s surprising to see Stewart Granger in the role of Niccolò Paganini, and initially I would have questioned that decision – however, he does a rather good job, particularly considering how many scenes require him to perform complex violin pieces, although his hairstyle occasionally obscures his vision. Unfortunately, the film itself rarely rises above the level of an average historical romance; it centers on a relationship between Paganini and Phyllis Calvert, who portrays "Jeanne," whose mother desires a more suitable match for her than a musician. Dennis Price appears as “Paul de la Rochelle,” Jeanne’s suitor, seeming ill at ease in his clothing and delivering lines that feel unnatural. The film is lifted by Cecil Parker's performance as Luigi Germi, Paganini's manager and friend, who keeps him grounded while the musician achieves international fame alongside a complicated romantic life. The musical score is wonderful, although the audio mixing unfortunately makes it difficult to hear the spoken dialogue at times, and the costumes are perfectly fitting for the era. There are moments when the production feels overly staged, but as an introduction to Paganini’s music, it's definitely worth experiencing – or perhaps just listening to?
