John Chard on Godzilla

8/10 · Nov 29, 2015

The central figure—a colossal, politically charged reptile—is clearly enraged! Following nuclear weapon tests in the Pacific, vessels begin disappearing, and a distant island seems to be under assault by an ancient beast. Japanese researchers rush to investigate the situation, discovering Gojira, who is determined to cause widespread devastation, with Tokyo as his intended target. *Gojira* has been incredibly impactful, giving rise to countless sequels, adaptations, imitations, and tributes; there are even two versions of the film available for viewers. The American adaptation is reasonably entertaining, incorporating Raymond Burr into the original story’s framework. While it occasionally elicits unintentional laughter, it remains a diverting bit of entertainment. However, it doesn't measure up to Ishirô Honda's seminal work because that version possesses a remarkable atmosphere of dread, stemming from its creation ten years after the Hiroshima bombing; audiences at the time would undoubtedly have sensed the pervasive feeling of ruin woven throughout the film. Experiencing it now, thanks to its restoration to pristine condition, remains an impressive and thrilling event. The anticipation is skillfully crafted, keeping viewers in suspense as they await their first look at the enormous atomic being. When he finally appears, it’s a genuinely iconic moment in cinematic history. Unfortunately, the film's impact is somewhat lessened by a distracting romantic storyline, but the acting (particularly Takeshi Shimura’s) is quite captivating, and Akira Ifkube’s score is beautifully suited to the mood. Among films featuring humans in rubber suits, *Gojira* stands alone; it's intelligent, enjoyable, and above all else, unforgettable. 8/10
