It’s hard to miss the parallels between what happens to Blanche in the song and the events of this film! There's a strange sense that the avalanche itself mirrors the decline of a performer. Rock Hudson plays "Shelby," a wealthy man who has put everything he owns into a mountain resort intended to be a luxurious destination for his guests. Of course, he invites prominent people to the grand opening, including his mother (Jeanette Nolan), "Caroline" (Mia Farrow), and "Nick" (Robert Forster), who is suspicious about the potential instability of the construction site. And as it turns out, his concerns are justified – otherwise, there wouldn’t be a movie! It's possible that things could have been okay if not for that fact. The film spends roughly eighty minutes developing the situation before delivering what amounts to five minutes of nature essentially declaring "enough is enough." The story moves erratically, Mia Farrow doesn't add much substance to the narrative, and Hudson seems uncomfortable with a weak script and a plot that the title practically reveals. It felt like a disaster movie was inevitable, but it lacks any real feeling of danger and concludes rather weakly. It’s given a 15 rating... maybe that reflects the level of intelligence needed to appreciate it? There's some stylish cinematography, but beyond that, I wouldn’t recommend it, unfortunately.
