The atmosphere of winter is a strong point, though the narrative falls short. A young musician, Lee Montgomery, arrives in a Northeastern town during Winter and finds work for a man, Art Hindle, who struggles with his wife’s drinking problem, Susan Anspach. The guitarist and his dog reside in a small rental house next to their large home, Wolf Lodge, which clearly had a grand past. The wife becomes fascinated by the musician, but he seems more drawn to a local waitress, Olivia d'Abo. "The Legend of Wolf Lodge," also known as "Into the fire," was shown in some theaters back in 1988. Despite the mild nudity, it feels like something made for television, and not particularly well-made—though it does have its merits. I heard someone say that the only character you can root for is the dog, and that’s pretty much on target. Montgomery, appearing in his last film, is always pleasant to watch, but his character here is so foolish he loses audience support. For example, the husband demonstrates extreme masculinity, yet the musician readily kisses his wife while the man is only briefly out of sight. This isn't just foolish; it’s hard to accept as reality. I did find myself overlooking this somewhat because Montgomery delivers a consistently good performance. As for unbelievable moments, the ending goes completely off track in that regard. Olivia d'Abo looks great here and there’s some gentle nudity involving her and Anspach, but the latter’s character is so problematic it’s hard to find her appealing. What makes this low-budget film possibly worth seeing is the effective winter setting, filmed in Kirkfield Ontario during Winter. The prominent 1980s soundtrack often feels intrusive, although it does have some interesting aspects. Even with these positive elements, my wife gave me a look at the end that clearly communicated: "I can’t believe I sat through that?" It's brief, clocking in at 1 hour and 18 minutes, but contains too many dull sections. GRADE: C-
