"Dorothy Mills" might not neatly fit into traditional horror, but it still has enough unsettling moments to appeal to fans who want more than just gore and jump scares. I enjoy those kinds of films too, but I can also appreciate something that’s a bit more layered, less graphic, and leans toward psychological suspense—which is what this film delivers. "Dorothy Mills" exceeded my expectations, and frankly, I don't understand the complaints from some viewers who find it 'too slow'. On the contrary, the movie effectively grabs your attention right from the start, which is vital when you’re telling a story. If you can hook the audience early on and build a progressively intricate narrative, you're in good shape, and I believe Agnès Merlet and Juliette Sales succeeded admirably. I don't know anything about Jenn Murray, the young actress who played Dorothy Mills; I haven’t seen her previous work, but it isn’t necessary to understand that she is one of the most talented actresses I’ve encountered in quite some time. The first scene we see her in shows her character committing a violent act, which immediately creates feelings of disgust and dislike. Yet, just moments later, Dorothy appears as an apparently vulnerable child, inspiring more empathy than fear or rejection. Jenn Murray clearly possesses the skill to portray a multifaceted character who consistently surprises the audience with a range of behaviors throughout the film. Dorothy is a well-developed character, not only because of Jenn Murray’s performance, but also due to the writers' excellent work in crafting her. Judging by its marketing materials, you might assume "Dorothy Mills" is just another movie about a troubled young girl who kills people and avoids detection because no one suspects innocent children. However, that isn't really what it's about. The promotional image is deceptive; it suggests a campy tone when Dorothy is actually a much more intricate character with a great deal to convey. I appreciate campy films myself, but I’m simply pointing out the difference. I wholeheartedly suggest this well-made psychological thriller, which features one of the most complex antagonists I've seen recently. If you are looking for an engaging thriller with skillfully executed plot twists, give this movie a try.
