I found that many comedies like this one simply aren’t suited for film; transferring them from the stage diminishes their absurd humor. Surprisingly, the quality of the production actually detracts from the material itself. Even with experienced actors such as Binnie Hale and Gordon Harker, the tempo feels awkward, uninspired, and ultimately disappointing. The story is built around a straightforward play depicting a long-standing quarrel between the Gannett and Cheatle families, which leads to repeated recreations of a duel in a refined London home near Hyde Park Corner. However, this plot element isn't really important because the main focus is on the performances of the stars—Gibb McLaughlin and Eric Portman—who deliver a constant stream of dialogue intended to be clever but that comes across as unfunny, consisting of badly arranged comedic scenes with predictable jokes. The two leads do have some chemistry together, and they make an obvious effort to keep it engaging, but there’s not enough depth to save it from being a dull comedy.
