Wuchak on Apache Rifles

5/10 · May 23, 2021

During 1879 within the Arizona Territory, a cavalry captain—played by Audie Murphy—receives orders to locate a group of Mescalero Apaches who have departed from the Reservation. Joseph Vitale and Michael Dante portray the tribe's leader and his offspring, while L.Q. Jones and Ken Lynch take on roles as avaricious miners. “Apache Uprising,” released in 1964, functions as a low-budget Western adaptation of “Indian Uprising” from 1952. The film noticeably incorporates existing footage from the earlier picture, creating an awkward visual disparity with the newly filmed scenes. Despite this and the casting of white actors portraying Apaches, it proves to be a reasonably enjoyable Audie Murphy movie, possessing enough relatable moments to maintain viewer interest. However, a character’s abrupt shift in perspective near the film's conclusion feels implausible and indicative of poor scriptwriting. Linda Lawson, with her dark hair, possesses an unusual attractiveness as a missionary who shows compassion for the Apaches. The runtime is 1 hour, 31 minutes, and filming occurred at Bronson Canyon and Red Rock Canyon State Park in California. GRADE: C
