This oddball movie, undeniably "British" in its sensibility, proved to be surprisingly charming; it centers on the residents of the small isle of Todday as they oppose governmental efforts to turn their home into a military zone. The filmmakers clearly envisioned this as a follow-up to “Whisky Galore,” bringing back some familiar faces to support the effort. Consistent with many tales by Compton Mackenzie, the narrative is assembled in a peculiar fashion, presenting numerous personalities each possessing unique quirks that elicit amusement more than uproarious laughter. Donald Sinden’s performance doesn't quite fit; his usual dramatic acting style detracts from what would otherwise be a gently amusing experience. The remainder of the ensemble—Gordon Jackson, Noel Purcell, and Duncan Macrae—add some appealing echoes of the earlier film, showcasing the determination and self-reliance of these Scottish islanders who desire to operate outside any imposed legal structure. It's an enjoyable watch, perhaps not exceptional, but still worthwhile.
