This entertaining story of prisoners of war benefits from a solid ensemble, assembled by Lewis Gilbert, as they devise an unusual method for both escape and frustrating their captors. Jack Warner portrays "Maddox," leading the Allied effort, while Frederick Valk embodies the German adversary – and conflict begins. The Allies possess a concealed advantage, actually two in number. One is “Ainsworth” (Anthony Steel), who creates the other—"Albert"—a papier-mâché head paired with a folding frame designed to deceive guards during their regular checks. Following some initial setbacks, alongside moments of corruption, disloyalty and haste, it ultimately becomes "Ainsworth’s" responsibility to attempt an escape. The film features a noteworthy lineup of performers, including Anton Diffring and Robert Beatty, and while the writing demonstrates sincerity, there's sufficient wry humor throughout its 90-minute running time that I found quite agreeable.
