It's funny to imagine saying, “I realize they haven’t been invented yet, but do you have a match?”—and that feeling of playful wit really shines through in this unexpectedly enjoyable Arabian story. It might not break any new ground, but it clearly doesn't take itself seriously, the production values are surprisingly good, and there's enough action to easily fill ninety minutes. The plot gets going when traveling magician “Kazah” (Paul Henreid) has his troupe of dancers stolen, forcing him to journey to Bagdad with his assistant “Ben Ali” (Hans Conreid). Their mission is to rescue the girls from the clutches of grand vizier “Soradin” (George Keymas), who’s manipulating the Sultan and ruling through force. It doesn't take long for our hesitant protagonist to learn that the true sultan was overthrown and is hiding in the city's cellars with his spirited daughter, “Zendi” (Patricia Medina). They must team up against this wicked ruler, and it seems likely everything will resolve positively. With some rabbits appearing from nowhere, a belly dancer who has an unusually low voice, you might even feel like celebrating! I found this to be quite a fun film.
