It’s easy to imagine this being one of those educational videos that would have elicited laughter in classrooms, but thankfully it manages to sidestep any discussion of sex while still taking an extended amount of time – thirty minutes – to illustrate a process that normally unfolds over nine months. The film utilizes serviceable animated illustrations to trace the journey of a single ovum, which is notably never called an egg, as it leaves its protective environment and encounters countless sperm. While the narration doesn't explain how those sperm reach their destination, it does detail the moment one fortunate cell manages to fertilize the ovum, marking the beginning of life. The subsequent development into an embryo and beyond is shown in a similar animated style, accompanied by a rather dated musical score and images depicting both landscapes and a visibly affectionate couple – identifiable because they hold hands – along with their energetic young son who seems perpetually in need of embraces. It’s clearly intended for children and their parents, and the filmmakers navigate a delicate balance to present scientific information without causing discomfort or triggering emotional reactions; as such, it opts for a cautious approach that somewhat sanitizes the entire procedure, both visually and verbally. Despite this, there are some intriguing details presented, making it worthwhile viewing – primarily as a reminder of how these topics were handled in educational materials decades ago.
