This movie brings to mind the old "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" television show. Astronauts named "Ivan," portrayed by Bruce Campbell, and "Kelly," played by Renée O’Connor, find themselves on Earth where people are held captive by enormous insects with a fondness for wood – and an even greater appetite for beheading those who misbehave. “Ivan” finds himself in a difficult situation, so he assembles a small group to locate the last US President, "Demsky," played by Peter Jason, hoping he can inspire what remains of the population to rebel. During their journey, they encounter both people fighting for freedom and those working with the oppressors, leading up to an expected confrontation with these creatures who speak fluent English, aren’t particularly skilled with their sonic pulse weapons, and engage in quite a bit of conversation while conquering. Campbell seems to be intentionally overacting, which is probably necessary given how bad the dialogue is—even when he delivers a line reminiscent of "I'm Spartacus," it manages to elicit a chuckle. The special effects are fairly ordinary, but the expressions of confusion on the insects’ faces when they face (surprisingly effective) bows and arrows make the film worth seeing. It’s terrible, certainly, but if you go in with low expectations and don’t anticipate much, then it's surprisingly watchable for a ninety-minute runtime that feels longer than it should be.
