The champion of the Bayanbulak rally is brought in by a friend (Sha Yi) to lead a new team with considerable resources, aiming to establish a Chinese presence within the international rallying scene. “Zhang Chi” (Teng Chen) is given free rein to select his personnel and equipment, so he confidently enters the qualifying rounds for the Muchen 100. However, almost immediately after they begin, their turbos malfunction, none of his team members finish, and he’s forced to step down in disgrace. It becomes clear that something suspicious has been happening, and when he uncovers what transpired and who was responsible, he, along with his co-driver (Yin Zheng) and their former team manager, now working as an Uber driver (Wei Xiang), decide to enter the race unofficially to demonstrate that ultimately it’s the driver and the vehicle that matter. The film does a decent job of questioning the reliance on technology in contemporary motorsports, where almost everything is managed remotely by technicians, but the rest feels more like “Wacky Races,” as any sense of danger fades into some occasionally amusing off-road driving that would likely destroy even a Sherman tank, let alone a high-performance Audi. While it touches upon the increasing industrialization of this sport, there isn’t much focus on developing characters; aside from Teng Chen, we don't really get to know anyone, and his rivals are presented in a bland, impersonal way that encapsulates the film as a whole. There appears to be genuine footage included, but it’s hard to tell apart from the extensive CGI, occasionally bringing to mind the pod racing sequences from “The Phantom Menace” (1999). It's reasonably entertaining and there are some enjoyable moments, though I found it difficult to remain engaged for two hours.
